You can study on our Pre-sessional English programme at the 狼友社区 for 16, 10 or 6 weeks, depending on your current and target English language requirements. You can study on campus but there is also a distance-learning option for these courses.

Course details

You will choose your Pre-sessional English course based on your current IELTS level, that is how far you are from your English language requirement in your offer.

The table summarises the recommended courses for students with an English language requirement of 6.5 overall (6.0 subskill) or below in their offer letter. The table shows you how long it typically takes to reach the English language level required for entry to your chosen degree.

For advice on which course would suit your needs, please contact us at psadmissions@reading.ac.uk.

On campus or distance learning?

If you wish to study on campus and require a visa to study in the UK, you will need to provide proof of your language level with a Secure English Language Test (SELT) certificate. The most well-known test is UKVI IELTS.

If you wish to study on a distance-learning course, we also accept tests such as Academic IELTS, PTE Pearson and Duolingo. A full list of accepted tests can be found on our Acceptable English Language Tests page.

If you wish to study on a distance-learning course and require a visa for study, you must consider your visa application time and the release of the results.

Your Pre-sessional results are sent to the Admissions Team in the week commencing 7 September 2026. If you need to resit any of the assessments, your resit results will be sent in the week commencing 14 September 2026.

As long as you have accepted your main course academic offer, paid the deposit for this, and all other conditions have been met, you will then receive your main course Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). As the start of the new academic year is imminent, it is highly likely that you will require a priority visa. You can find help on applying for your visa and specific information on application fees and processing times on our Visa and immigration support website.
