Overview
Management has been defined as a process of coordinating work activities to achieve specific goals. This requires an understanding of the key activities of an organisation and their roles in meeting its goals. This introductory subject is designed to provide students with an overview of the management function and its role in organisations and society. It lays out the principles behind this function – the theory – and relates to how the principles are applied in today’s business environment – the practice.
This subject follows a logical sequence. It begins by defining management and managers. Some management theories are then introduced. The main body of the subject deals with the many tasks a manager performs – planning, organising, strategic management, decision-making and control.
The final part of the subject deals with the role of management in the context of a changing environment to which management must respond if the business is to remain competitive. Management of this change must be accomplished within a framework of business ethics and social responsibility given the increasing attention to corporate governance.
On completing the course, students will be able to:
- Apply the basic functions of management.
- Differentiate the differences between internal and external influences on business.
- Explain contemporary issues in business.
